Google is continuing its AI integration within Gmail. At the IO 2026 developer conference, the company unveiled enhancements to the “AI Inbox” feature for Gmail, introducing conversational capabilities. Users will now be able to inquire about their inbox details instead of merely inputting search terms.
The recently launched Gmail Live, powered by Gemini AI, aims to streamline the process of locating information hidden deep within your inbox.

Whether you’re looking for flight details, a dentist appointment time, Airbnb access codes, or event information for your child’s school, the new feature offers immediate answers.
Previously, finding specific emails required entering keywords into the search box. But with the abundance of messages that might share those terms, pinpointing emails could be challenging.
“Gmail Live can understand conversational questions, handle follow-ups, and seamlessly transition topics,” said Devanshi Bhandari, Gmail’s product lead, during a pre-conference briefing.
This initiative reflects Google’s broader strategy to demonstrate how AI can meaningfully enhance everyday tech experiences, especially at a time when skepticism around AI is rising due to accompanying environmental concerns.
The ability to swiftly retrieve lost emails exemplifies practical AI applications, a point Google aims to establish as valuable to its users.
Bhandari showcased Gmail Live’s capabilities, querying about various inbox items like a child’s project and travel arrangements. Users can now ask questions in natural language, and the AI will respond accordingly.
During the demonstration, Gmail Live accurately differentiated between terms such as “field trip” and “trip,” showing its extensive comprehension. Furthermore, it can extract specific details, such as hotel room numbers, even if not all relevant people are named in the inquiry.
Similar voice-driven technology is also set to be integrated into Google Keep, enhancing that platform’s usability.
Importantly, Gmail Live serves as an alternative to traditional search methods rather than a replacement.
This cautious approach follows user backlash after Google introduced AI elements into Google Photos, which led to a rollback of some features due to dissatisfaction among users.
In addition to Gmail Live, enhancements such as suggested drafts, instant access to files, and task management features are on the way.

Additionally, the AI Inbox will now be accessible to not just Google AI Ultra subscribers but also Google AI Pro and Plus subscribers, creating a comprehensive view of tasks and emails on a single platform.
The voice-activated Gmail Live feature is set to launch this summer, initially for Google AI Ultra subscribers.
