Filmmaking icon Martin Scorsese has teamed up with Black Forest Labs, an AI image-generation company, as a partner and adviser, reported The New York Times on Tuesday.
However, the renowned director intends to utilize the technology exclusively for storyboarding.
In a statement to the Times, Scorsese remarked, “For 70 years, I’ve been creating my own storyboards.” He emphasized that this new tool vastly improves his ability to convey his vision to cinematographers and production designers with greater speed and efficiency.
Black Forest Labs, a company with a workforce of 70, is situated not in Silicon Valley but in Freiburg, Germany, near the Black Forest region. Despite its unconventional location, the startup is instrumental in image functionalities for platforms like Adobe, Canva, Microsoft, and Meta. Its latest valuation reached an impressive $3.25 billion, backed by investors such as BroadLight Capital, co-founded by Scorsese’s own talent manager, Rick Yorn.
The founders of Black Forest Labs also created Stable Diffusion and, as reported by Wired, recently opted not to collaborate with Elon Musk’s xAI after concerns arose during a previous partnership involving Grok’s image generator, specifically regarding content safety measures.
While this news may raise eyebrows within the entertainment sector, even with its narrow application, it signifies a potential shift in Hollywood’s previously staunch opposition to AI technologies.
