Environmental advocate Erin Brockovich is on a mission to enhance transparency regarding the construction of data centers and their effects on local communities.
Brockovich, known for her portrayal by Julia Roberts in a film about her legal battle with Pacific Gas & Electric, has recently launched a new website featuring a map of data centers located throughout the United States.
This map is described as a “work in progress,” showcasing data centers reported by local community members. In a Substack article, Brockovich noted that her call for reports on data center issues, made in April, garnered nearly 4,000 responses within just the first month.
“The single most common concern — surpassing noise, water usage, and escalating utility costs — is encapsulated in one recurring word in these submissions: transparency,” she remarked.
She clarified that her stance does not oppose data centers or AI outright; instead, she criticizes “the patterns highlighted by our map: projects announced only after permits are secured, unresponsive developers, and local officials bound by NDAs before residents are aware of proposed developments.”
