Apple’s Exciting AI Upgrade: What to Expect for Siri and iOS 27

Just ahead of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, Bloomberg has published leaked renders of what Apple’s planned AI upgrade could look like on iPhone — including a brand-new Siri app meant to rival ChatGPT and other AI chatbots — as well as how Siri’s new capabilities will be woven throughout the operating system.

The images were produced by Bloomberg based on what it saw and learned from sources.

Siri will still be activated by pressing a button in iOS 27, but the response and animation will now be displayed through the iPhone’s Dynamic Island. This feature is a black, pill-shaped area at the top of the screen that currently showcases Live Activities and real-time updates from various apps. This new mode is optimized for quick interactions, similar to current usage of Siri.

Additionally, a revamped feature will make Siri-powered searches more accessible. Users will be able to swipe down on their screens to access Spotlight Search, which collects information from both their device and the internet. This swipe gesture will now leverage Siri’s AI, which utilizes a new model powered by Google’s Gemini AI technology to enhance searching capabilities.

After accessing this feature, iPhone users will be able to carry out a variety of tasks such as searching, launching apps, sending messages, checking the weather, creating calendar entries, browsing notes, and triggering app shortcuts. Results will appear in a formatted card layout, also utilizing the Dynamic Island for display.

Apple’s AI strategy closely resembles its earlier billion-dollar arrangement with Google that established the latter as the default search engine on iPhones. Just as creating a search engine from scratch was not an option for Apple, the complexities and costs of developing AI technology solo are significant. Thus, Apple is collaborating with external partners to acquire cutting-edge AI tools while simultaneously developing its own local AI capabilities, which operate on users’ devices—a strategy that aligns with its privacy-focused branding and avoids extensive delays in adaptation.

In addition, Bloomberg reports that a standalone Siri app will be launched to compete with existing chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. This app will allow users to access their previous chat histories and upload various document types alongside text.

Apple’s scale gives it a significant competitive edge. While ChatGPT boasts 900 million weekly active users, Apple enjoys an install base of approximately 2.5 billion across all its devices. This positions Apple uniquely to introduce AI solutions to users who have yet to engage with standalone AI applications.
