OpenRouter Secures $113 Million in Series B Financing

The AI gateway company OpenRouter, which launched in 2023, has successfully raised $113 million in a Series B funding round led by CapitalG, a growth venture fund affiliated with Alphabet, Google’s parent entity. Although the startup has not disclosed its updated valuation, a report by The New York Times suggests it is now approximately $1.3 billion post-money.

This marks a significant rise from the estimated post-money valuation of $547 million recorded last year, according to PitchBook, following a $40 million Series A round in June 2025. That earlier funding round was led by notable firms such as Andreessen Horowitz and Menlo Ventures, with Sequoia also participating.

A lot can change in a year. The landscape of AI has evolved from focusing primarily on training to a current emphasis on inference and agents. OpenRouter’s AI gateway has experienced a surge in demand, helping businesses and AI users seamlessly choose from various models tailored to different tasks, which can optimize costs and enhance accuracy.

The platform boasts access to over 400 AI models, including those from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, xAI, and DeepSeek, according to the company. It reports an impressive user base of 8 million globally and processes 100 trillion tokens monthly—equivalent to about 25 trillion weekly. This marks a fivefold increase from six months ago when it was managing around 5 trillion tokens weekly.

The success of OpenRouter suggests that the AI model is becoming an increasingly integrated and interchangeable component for actively utilizing AI technologies.

Rather than a scenario where companies settle on a single dominant model provider—potentially leading to a monopoly-like situation—the rise of OpenRouter highlights a different trend. Businesses seem inclined to avoid commitment to a single model supplier, as they have with various SaaS solutions, indicating that a multi-model ecosystem is already in full swing.
