During its annual Google I/O event on Tuesday, Google unveiled Pics, a new AI-based design and image-generation application tailored for Google Workspace. Designed to be user-friendly, it caters to a diverse audience, including educators and entrepreneurs.
Pics allows users to create everything from social media posts to promotional materials using basic text instructions, eliminating the need for specialized skills or complex software. By introducing this new tool, Google aims to compete with well-known design platforms such as Canva, as well as emerging competitors like Claude Design by Anthropic. This move into the AI-driven design space indicates that visual content creation is becoming increasingly crucial for businesses.
The initial rollout of Pics will be to select testers at the I/O event, followed by a broader launch aimed at Google AI Ultra subscribers later this summer, according to the company.
Despite the high-quality images current AI models can produce, modifying specific elements remains a challenge. Users often need to completely rephrase their prompts just to tweak minor details. Pics addresses this issue by enabling easy image editing along with generation.
Users simply enter a prompt, and Pics generates the desired visuals. The editing feature, powered by Gemini, ensures that any aspect of the generated design can be adjusted. Users can revise via a new prompt or by directly clicking on parts of the design to leave feedback, reminiscent of editing in Google Docs.
Moreover, direct editing is possible without additional comments; for example, if a time on a party invitation needs to be updated, users can change it manually.
Pics operates on the Nano Banana 2 framework, which Google claims is well-suited for the app due to its support for accurate text rendering, extensive real-world information, and intricate visual generation. Additionally, Pics is integrated into Google Workspace, promoting seamless visual collaboration across its suite of applications.
Once users finalize their designs, they can download, copy, print, or share their creations. Google also provides the option to pass the design to someone else for a final review before it’s officially shared.
