Drug discovery is one of the most expensive pursuits in modern industry. Finding a single viable molecule can take a decade and cost billions, and most candidates still don’t make it. A generation of AI startups has promised to fix that — most have made the problem less painful for researchers, who are already technically sophisticated enough to use the tools.

In an innovative collaboration with Anthropic, SandboxAQ is set to embed its advanced scientific AI models into Claude. This shift puts sophisticated drug discovery and materials science tools at users’ fingertips through a conversational platform, eliminating the need for specialized hardware.
Established around five years ago as an offshoot of Alphabet, SandboxAQ boasts Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, as its chairman. The firm has successfully secured over $950 million from a variety of investors and has diversified its services, launching a cybersecurity division among others.
Distinctively, SandboxAQ develops large quantitative models, or LQMs. These models are grounded in physics, enabling them to perform quantum chemistry calculations and simulate molecular dynamics and microkinetics. This is vital, as it provides researchers insights into the behavior of potential molecules before any experimental work begins.
According to a company statement, “Trained on real-world lab data and scientific equations, LQMs are AI models engineered for the quantitative economy, a $50+ trillion sector spanning biopharma, financial services, energy, and advanced materials.” Their goal extends beyond merely creating another chatbot; they are targeting the transformative economic potential of AI.
Chai Discovery and Isomorphic Labs concentrate primarily on enhancing scientific models, while SandboxAQ emphasizes user-friendliness.
“For the first time, we have a frontier [quantitative] model on a frontier LLM that someone can access in natural language,” stated Nadia Harhen, SandboxAQ’s general manager of AI simulation, during an interview with ToolsMixAi. In the past, users had to provide their own digital tools to access these models.
SandboxAQ caters to computational scientists, research scientists, and experimentalists, most of whom are affiliated with large-scale pharmaceutical or industrial firms looking for new, market-ready materials.
“Our customers approach us after encountering limitations with other software, where the intricacy of their challenges led to underwhelming or ineffective real-world applications,” Harhen added.
