On Friday, OpenAI introduced a new suite of personal finance tools in preview for ChatGPT Pro users in the U.S. This feature allows users to link their financial accounts and query anything from spending trends to long-term financial strategies.
In collaboration with Plaid, OpenAI enables account connections across more than 12,000 banks and financial institutions, including major players like Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One. Users can expect a comprehensive dashboard that displays their investment performance, spending habits, subscription services, and upcoming financial obligations.
This launch follows OpenAI’s acquisition of the personal finance startup Hiro’s team last month, which received backing from venture firms like Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive. While OpenAI acknowledged the value of the Hiro team’s financial acumen in developing this tool, it did not clarify the extent of their involvement in its creation.
To access the new feature, users can either click “Get started” under the “Finances” section in the sidebar or type “@Finances, connect my accounts” in a ChatGPT conversation. The chatbot will then assist them in linking their accounts through Plaid. OpenAI also shared plans to support Intuit soon, broadening the tool’s capabilities to include analyses of stock sales’ tax implications and credit card approval odds.

As of now, OpenAI reports that over 200 million users utilize ChatGPT monthly for financial queries. The new GPT-5.5 model has enhanced contextual reasoning capabilities, vital for tackling finance-related inquiries. OpenAI claimed it collaborated with finance professionals to set a benchmark aimed at improving the quality of financial guidance offered.
With this upgraded financial tool, users can craft specific questions such as, “I think I’ve been spending more lately. What’s changed?” or “Can you help me devise a plan to purchase a home in the next five years?”
For those wishing to remove account connections, users can navigate to Settings > Apps > Finances. After disconnecting, any synced information will be deleted from ChatGPT within 30 days. Additionally, users can also manage and delete financial data from the Finances page.
General-purpose chatbots often receive inquiries on sensitive topics like finance, health, and personal matters. Companies in the AI sector are recognizing this trend and launching specialized solutions. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have developed health-focused tools, while Perplexity recently introduced its own financial research product targeting professionals.
OpenAI confirmed that its personal finance tools will be accessible on both the web and iOS for Pro users. Based on user feedback, the company aims to enhance the product before rolling it out to Plus users.
