OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed concerns about AI’s environmental impact this week while speaking at an event hosted by The Indian Express.

During his recent trip to India for a significant AI summit, Altman dismissed claims regarding AI’s water consumption as “completely untrue.” He recognized previous concerns tied to older cooling methods in data centers but emphasized that these claims are unfounded today.

“You see these ridiculous statements online, like ‘ChatGPT uses 17 gallons of water per query,’” Altman stated, calling such assertions “totally insane.”

However, he acknowledged valid worries regarding overall energy use, stressing a pressing need for a shift towards sustainable energy sources like nuclear, wind, and solar to cope with the burgeoning demand for AI technologies.

With no legal obligations for tech firms to report their energy and water usage, researchers have resorted to independent investigations. There’s also a growing concern about increasing energy costs affecting data centers.

In response to a question regarding whether a single ChatGPT query requires energy comparable to 1.5 iPhone battery charges, Altman firmly disagreed, stating, “There’s no way it’s anything close to that much.”

Furthermore, he criticized the narrative surrounding ChatGPT’s energy consumption, arguing it is skewed when compared directly to human energy expenditure for a similar task.

“Training a human takes significant energy as well,” Altman remarked, highlighting that it involves years of learning and the collective evolution of countless individuals. “It’s essential to evaluate the energy used once AI models are trained against human energy use in a fair comparison,” he concluded.

You can watch the full interview below. The conversation about water and energy usage begins at around 26:35.

This discourse around AI’s environmental footprint is critical as it shapes public policy and ethical guidelines. Understanding the actual impact of AI technologies on energy and water resources is vital for ensuring sustainable development in an increasingly digital world.
