Mukesh Ambani, the billionaire chairperson of Indian conglomerate Reliance, on Thursday unveiled the group’s ₹10 trillion (about $110 billion) plan to build AI computing infrastructure in India over the next seven years.
During the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Ambani announced that this substantial investment would facilitate the establishment of large-scale data centers, develop a nationwide edge computing framework, and introduce new AI services through Reliance’s Jio telecom platform.
Ambani noted that construction of multi-gigawatt data centers has already commenced in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with an additional capacity of over 120 megawatts expected to come online in late 2026.
This commitment by Reliance is part of a larger trend in AI investment within India. Just days ago, Adani Group revealed intentions to invest around $100 billion in AI data center development, and the Indian government anticipates over $200 billion in AI infrastructure projects within the next two years.
Additionally, global tech leaders are bolstering their positions in India. For example, OpenAI has collaborated with the Tata Group to create approximately 100 megawatts of AI capacity, with aspirations to expand to a gigawatt.
Ambani emphasized that this initiative is critical for achieving technological independence in India, asserting that the nation “cannot afford to rent intelligence.” He aims to significantly lower the cost of AI services, akin to how Reliance drastically reduced mobile data prices.
“Today’s primary limitation in AI is not the lack of talent or creativity,” Ambani stated. “It is the limited and expensive compute resources.”

According to Ambani, the development will be powered by Reliance’s 10 gigawatts of surplus energy sourced from solar initiatives in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.
Reliance intends to collaborate with Indian businesses, startups, and academic institutions to weave AI into various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, healthcare, and finance.
Moreover, Jio has forged AI alliances; last year, it reached a partnership with Google for providing free access to Gemini AI Pro for millions of users in India.
To advance the adoption of AI technology, Reliance also plans to enhance AI capabilities in several Indian languages, Ambani mentioned.
This bold initiative underscores the competitive race among India’s leading conglomerates to capitalize on a burgeoning technology sector that is poised to reshape the nation’s economic landscape.
